What is Prestressed concrete ?

Prestressed concrete is also a special type of concrete. As we are aware of the fact that concrete is good in compression and weak in tension. We stress the concrete in the production stage itself by compressing the concrete so as to enhance the tensile properties of concrete. This compression is produced by the tensioning of high-strength “tendons” located within or adjacent to the concrete and is done to improve the performance of the concrete in service. Tendons may consist of single wires, multi-wire strands or thread bars that are most commonly made from high tensile steels.

The properties of prestressed concrete are as follows :

  • High strength concrete
  • Improved structural capacity
  • High serviceability

Prestressed concrete is used in a wide range of building and civil structures where its improved performance can allow for longer spans, reduced structural thickness, and material savings compared with simple RCC.

Applications of prestressed concrete:

  • High rise buildings
  • residential slabs
  • foundation systems
  • bridge
  • dam
  • silos
  • tanks
  • industrial pavements
  • nuclear containment structures

At eigenplus, our goal is to teach civil engineering students about structural analysis and design starting from the fundamental principles. We do this with the help of interactive android applications and accompanying web articles and videos.

Our apps have helped more than 400 thousand students across the world to understand and learn the concepts of structural engineering. Check out our apps on the google play store.
